Brief History of WiSE

UNCW Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) was originally founded in 2007 by a small group of dedicated, underrepresented women on campus. The organization supported fellow female students in their educational endeavors in the STEM fields. After a few successful years, many of the passionate students graduated from UNCW and the structured organization of WiSE fell apart. Despite this, the Mission of UNCW WiSE continued without leadership. WiSE participated in annual STEM events on campus and remained a presence in this community.

In late 2011, a student who transferred to UNCW knew of the former group and sought out its leadership. Upon learning the group had been defunct for years, she decided this was a group that deserved the chance to thrive on campus once more. She believed in the Mission, that WiSE is a priceless organization to have in Wilmington, and that the group is an invaluable resource to all students and community members.

So, in March of 2012, the fire behind UNCW WiSE was rekindled and the student organization took off with great success and welcome from the community.

For the past two years, UNCW WiSE has participated in countless community service and volunteer projects involving the betterment of our society and educational events for children and families of all kinds. We are a very active, open, and welcoming group of strong women who have backgrounds in the STEM fields. We strive to promote K-12 girls into the STEM fields while remaining true to our mission of supporting each other as we progress towards a more equal and innovative future.
